Sugar Shack diner in Chester, Montana - June 2008

“Sugar Shack”

Posted on October 1, 2022October 1, 2022 By David In Great Falls

Back in June 2008, my wife and I rented a small U-Haul so we could drive up to Chester to pick up some very cool vintage Heywood-Wakefield furniture that we bought.

Chester is the “Heart Of The Hi-Line,” by the way.

We were delighted to see an iconic “Americana” diner called The Sugar Shack.

Sadly, it had been shuttered for a while, it seemed, but we peered inside to behold its retro glory.

It’s so…perfect. And cute. And retro.

We always wondered if it ever re-opened.

Well, we happened to catch a new episode of “Backroads Of Montana” a few days ago and found out that it is OPEN (during the summer 🙂 )!

But it’s not in Chester anymore – it’s been moved a few miles down Highway 2 to the town of Rudyard, between Chester and Havre!

And the new owners have a Facebook page!

The episode highlights the history of the diner – from 1953 in Chinook, then to Conrad, then to Chester – and now in Rudyard!

What a treat to see it again – and very cool that “Backroads Of Montana” is back with new episodes!
