My favorite new TV show is “Resident Alien.” Premise: an alien tasked with destroying humanity by using a “device” crashes on Earth. His device is lost in the snowy mountains. The alien kills a reclusive and apparently retired physician (Harry Vanderspiegle) who lives by a lake outside of a small town and assumes his identity, and quickly becomes engaged with the folks in town as he assumes the role of town doctor following the death of the town’s only practicing doctor. Off-the-clock – he is still taking excursions into the wilderness trying to find his missing device so that he can exterminate all humans.
Hilarity ensues. No, seriously – this is LOL-funny, and although I’ve never been a big fan of Alan Tudyk, he is absolutely GREAT in this role – learning to act like a human, navigating social norms (not often successfully), Googling just in the nick of time to treat patients, etc.
And all of the cast and their characters are amazing – from Asta to the bar owner to the Sheriff and his deputy to the mayor – even the little kid who sees through the shape-shifting doctor and is the only person who can see his true alien form.
AND there is also a team of two agents (FBI? military?) who are trying to find the alien, and are apparently not afraid to kill anyone who gets in their way.
Overall consensus from reviews that I’ve read are pretty positive – here’s a sample.
BTW, the town in question – called “Patience, Colorado” – is apparently actually a town called Ladysmith in British Columbia – and it is simply gorgeous.
