Howling in Great Falls

The Howling

If you’ve been outside at around 8 p.m. in Great Falls the last few nights, you might have heard something unusual: howling (along with some other noises).

No, it’s not a pack of wolves – it’s people who are showing their appreciation for people who are on the front lines in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are at least two Facebook groups spearheading the “howl” movement in Great Falls. One is called HOWL For Great Falls, and the other is called A Grateful Great Falls.

Do I think the howling is appreciated by healthcare workers and other “essential” workers? Sure. But it’s also a great way for people to do SOMETHING to express their frustration during these strange days of restrictions and closures.

The Great Falls Police Department appreciates the howling, too, but also noted that some people might be taking it a bit too far:

“What an awesome thing to hear so many community members coming together to hoot, holler, and howl each night. We certainly appreciate the enthusiasm and the incredible show of support. Please remember that discharging fireworks is absolutely illegal right now. We also discourage honking horns, blaring alarms, or adding any other loud popping, banging, or booming noises to your celebrations. Thank you for all of your support, we will get through this together.“
