Sculpture Anniversary

Posted on June 27, 2023June 27, 2023 By David A. Sherman

Yesterday marked 10 years that this…cool? unusual? odd? …piece of art was installed at Gibson Park.

I’m still not entirely what it is, or what it “means.”

It doesn’t have to mean anything, of course, but I wonder what the artist’s intent or vision was.

When I posted it on Facebook, it generated some opinions – here are a few comments:

It’s ugly, and that is NOT ART!!! The top piece is worth saving, but the thing as a whole sucks! Just what the heck is it supposed to be???

Art is unique and well I do enjoy the veiny friend

My six year old looked at me like I was stupid when I asked her if this was scary lol. She also knows its a lion.

Is it a big block bear? I don’t think it will get any art award! It looks unfinished and absolutely stupid” It’s out of place and a bad choice by Great Falls!

As an artist, I find this piece fascinating, and yes, it gets your attention!

Do I like it? Sure. It’s quirky and interesting, and it provides a counterpoint of sorts to more traditional art installations around town.
